Programme summary

Come and spend the day with us exploring the illustrious Jewish past and the
vibrant and dynamic Jewish present in Hackney. This will be a Limmud with a
difference, with all the Limmud regulars, and a strong local flavour. Here is a
selection of the over 70 presentations you can enjoy:

Religion and mysticism: Tell Me Text - Lindsay Taylor-Goodhart, Stuart Brooks and
Shulamit Ambalu discuss the significance of the Book of Ruth; interfaith textual reasoning - learn together with Jewish, Muslim and Christian scholars; what is Humanistic Judaism?

Hackney and the East End: Memories of growing up and politics in Hackney –
members of the Jewish Care Brenner Centre; the 43 Group, fighting fascism after the
war; Michael Levy - Jewish entrepreneur; doyen of Hackney history, Melvyn Brooks;
Hackney Jewish community representatives discuss the present and future for Jews in
Hackney.

Performance: Be entertained by Klezmer Klub; the London Jewish Male Choir; Yiddish
comedy from David Schneider; rehearsed readings from new Jewish plays.
Yiddish: Judy Batalion - courting and cursing in Yiddish; Ilana Cravitz – Klezmer fiddle;
Derek Reid - songs of London.

Art: Exhibitions of work by members of the Brenner Centre; Naomi Alexander – paintings of Lithuania; photographs of Jewish life in Hackney; video from Rachel Garfield.

Culture: Novelists Charlotte Mendelson and Naomi Alderman; in conversation with
Bernard Kops; Jonathan Freedland on his book, Jacob’s Gift; Paul Kieve – the history of
Jewish magic.

Tikkun Olam: Antony Lerman on multiculturalism; Brian Klug on the future for Jews in
the Diaspora; children meeting across divides in Britain, Cyprus and Israel; Jews working
with refugees; Jewish/Arab peace initiatives in Israel; a surprise from Jewdas.

Film: First showing of a new film about Jews of the East End by Elliott Tucker;
Hineini - Coming Out in a Jewish High School; A Kid for Two Farthings.

Global: Janet Levin – a tour of small Jewish communities around the world; the situation of Ethiopian Jewry - Barbara Ribakove Gordon.

Hands on: How to be a Hebrew scribe; dance and art workshops; comedy writing/
performing workshop; give us your Hackney memories in our video box.

Young Limmud (for 5 – 18 year olds): A full programme of music, games, art, stories,
and discussion.
