Are there too many taboos? Is British Jewry too scared to produce really engaging art?

Jews in the History of British Photojournalism

Michael Berkowitz
Location: Lib 1
Tracks: History, Visual Arts
Type: Lecture

There is little investigation, or even memory, of the fact that Jews profoundly changed photojournalism in Britain--and the rest of the world--from 1918 to the 1950s. Stefan Lorant's Lilliput and Picture Post set the pictorial press on an entirely new course. Erich Salomon, murdered in Auschwitz, one of Lorant's featured artists, is arguably the most important but least known of trend-setting photographers.
