Jacob Israel de Haan was a man of considerable controversy in early 20th century Holland and Jerusalem. He combined celebrity as poet with notoriety as a homosexual; ultra orthodoxy with anti-Zionist politics; academic achievement with scandal. He was the victim of the first political assassination in pre-war Israel. We will explore how De Haan with all his contradictions shows the Jew's struggle with identity in the emerging modern world.

Our passengers: an 82 year old Holocaust survivor, two refusniks, a member of The Bereaved Families Circle who lost his daughter in a suicide bombing in Jerusalem, a 72 year-old German Jewess by conversion and an American Shoa survivor. Why? Because we see a different history, because we see today's reality differently, because what we see is happening to Palestinians and to Israelis is unacceptable, and we said 'This is not in our name'.

During the 19th Century Jewish communities in Western Europe faced 3 'Affairs'. Each - with its own international dimension - threatened to disturb the sense of progress felt in the Age of Emancipation and necessitated new means of organisation and alliances with the non-Jewish world. The Dreyfus Affair shocked Western European Jewry, forcing them to confront the reality of continued and new forms of Anti-Semitism in even the most liberal States. One particularly traumatised observer was Theodore Herzl. . .
