Laura Janner-Klausner
Location: Ram 6
Tracks: Communities, Interfaith
Type: Workshop / Practical, Discussion
Laura and Mark are rabbis who find joy in helping accompany couples and their families in intermarried relationships. De-Objectifying Israel - Why We Made Aliyah
Marc Rosenberg
Location: Ram 3
Tracks: Diaspora, Israel
Type: Panel Debate, Discussion
Come hang out with some olim and Israel-minded folks to hear about the opportunities they discovered in the Holy Land and the 'only in Israel' stories that make you laugh and cry. We will be looking at Israel as a real place and why it presents uncomfortable questions for contemporary Jewry.

Maurice Stone,
Ilai Szpiezak

Jews (Must) Go - But Which Location Can Help Foster Creativity? (3 of 4)
Jeremy Leigh
Location: Soc 2
Tracks: Diaspora, History, Literature
Type: Lecture, Discussion
'Palaces of Gold': No need to have attended earlier sessions in this series discussing the Jewish Grand Tour, the destinations Jews 'must' travel to and what they talk about when they get there. Today we visit sites in Volubilis (Morocco), Odessa, the prairies of Saskatchewan and a small square in Jerusalem in the search for 'palaces' of Jewish culture. Which locations are the most conducive for fostering Jewish creativity?
Kvetching and Kvelling - What Every Parent and Teacher in the Modern World Needs to Know: a Kisharon Guide
Leibel Cowan
Location: Sci 1
Tracks: Disability, Education, Social Justice
Type: Lecture, Discussion
With years of experience, providing support to individuals and their families who face the challenges of moderate to severe learning disabilities, you'd expect us to know a thing or two about special educational needs. But what can this knowledge teach us about the basic emotional and academic needs of every child?
Master-stories: the Narratives of Three Cultures
Barbara Spectre
Location: Sci 2
Tracks: Education, Interfaith, Philosophy
Type: Lecture, Discussion
Moses, Siddhartha and Oedipus - what the stories of three young lives can reveal about our own perspectives on time, self, and purpose. This is a study in comparative religions, using cultural heroes as models of differing world-views. This session sharpens the definition of what makes Judaism and Jews different and unique... and why it is sometimes so difficult yet wonderful to be a Jew.
Nietzsche and Modern Orthodoxy
Michael Harris
Location: Ram 5
Tracks: Modernity, Philosophy
Type: Discussion, Text Study
Friedrich Nietzsche was one of the 19th century's most fascinating and influential philosophers. Nietzsche's thought seems light years away from Judaism. He was a convinced atheist, a sceptic about morality, and a denier of the existence of any world except this one. But might some of Nietzsche's ideas still resonate with Jewish thought? We will explore some intriguing parallels between Nietzsche and Rabbi Joseph Soloveitchik, the 20th century's leading modern Orthodox thinker.
Sons and a Father: Expelling Ishmael (1 of 2)
Lewis Warshauer
Location: Sci 7
Tracks: Tanach/Text, Visual Arts
Type: Discussion
Sons and fathers: a frequent and fraught topic in the Bible. We will view and discuss works of art that depict events around Abraham's expulsion of his older son Ishmael. Using art as visual commentary, we'll explore insights into family dynamics and the role of this episode in Judaism. Part 2 is Abraham and Isaac.
The Dark Side of the Talmudic Stories
Jacky Levy
Location: Soc 5
Tracks:
Type: Discussion, Lecture
There are two types of Talmudic stories, those that are explored by the academy, and the other used in Rabbi's sermons. But does anyone really tell them well? Do they thrill you, make you laugh, inspire you the way a good story should? Not really? Come and learn what happens when we explore the dark side of Talmudic stories so that they become less didactic and less rabbinic.
The Essence of Jewish Music
Lior Kaminetsky
Location: Arts - Ensemble
Tracks: History, Music, Music Workshops
Type: Lecture, Performance
Music has been an important factor in Jewish tradition. One may find old musical traditions among communities, some of which are ascribed to the time of the Jerusalem Temple. Lior will demonstrate various old Jewish music styles and will discuss the following related issues: What happened to the Temple tunes? Is there original 'Jewish music' or just a collection of environmental musical influences? What musical characteristics would build such music?
Turning Disability to an Edge - the Improbable Story of an Olympic Medallist
Boaz Kramer
Location: Ram 2
Tracks: Disability, Israel, Leadership
Type: Lecture, Discussion
Through his personal story of turning disability to Olympic success, Boaz will lead the audience through his unusual theory on how a disability can be turned from a disadvantage to an extraordinary edge.
UK Jewry: Challenges, Achievements and the Future
Norma Brier,
Laura Marks,
Vivian Wineman
Location: Ram 1
Tracks: Anglo Jewish Politics, Communities, Leadership
Type: Panel Debate, Discussion
This panel discussion, hosted by the President of the Board of Deputies, will bring together some of the community's leading lights in the areas of education, social care and volunteering to examine what the future might hold for the UK's Jewish community. We'll be asking some tough questions; expect some frank answers.
What I As a Rabbi Learned From Pope John Paul II
Michael Schudrich
Location: Soc 1
Tracks: Halacha, Interfaith, Leadership
Type: Lecture
As the Rabbi of Poland, I have heard much about the life and teachings of Pope John Paul II. What can or should a Rabbi learn from a great leader of another religion. Is it permitted to do so? And if yes, how should you go about accomplishing this.
Why Pray? A Text Based Analysis of the Earliest Jewish Sources on Prayer with Implications for Contemporary Ritual
Danny Epstein
Location: Ram 4
Tracks: Halacha, Mysticism, Philosophy
Type: Discussion, Text Study
Participants will probe sources that address the origins of prayer in Judaism, and will explore the following questions: How important is the act of prayer for a person's spiritual life and moral development? How does prayer affect the 'prayer'? What is 'kavana'? Does prayer have meaning if 'kavana' is lacking? How do I discover my own voice in the world of organised and uniform prayer?
