A Muslim Explores the Torah: the Story of the Scouts in Shelach Lecha

Muslims are expected to believe in earlier revelations and prophets. But there are, in fact, not very many Muslims who actually read the Torah. What happens If a Muslim theologian studies the text while being open to insights from it? I am going to share and discuss some of my own discoveries, using the example of the story of the scouts in Shelach Lecha, and we then continue exploring together.

Shai Agnon is considered by many to be the greatest of all modern Hebrew prose writers. Objectively, he is the only Hebrew writer to get a Nobel prize for literature. We will look at one or two of his very shortest stories, 'The Story of the Goat and 'From Foe to Friend' and try and understand what in fact is going on underneath the surface and why is he considered so great.

The names Louis Lewandowski and Solomon Sulzer are not known to many shul-goers, although their musical compositions are heard throughout the world of Ashkenazi shul music. Their disappointment with the dissipation and loss of traditional Jewish nusach (the style or melodic base of a prayer service) led them to compose full settings of shul services that have remained popular to this day.

This session challenges readings of Genesis 21 that either Sarah maliciously or courageously 'forced' the expulsion of Hagar and Ishmael because Ishmael was threatening Isaac. Using a combination of linguistic analysis and clues embedded in the Genesis text, we will explore the basis of these misconceptions; why they have persisted, and what may have motivated Sarah (and Hagar).
