Divine Love and Human Love: Ethics in the Thought of Franz Rosenzweig and Emmanuel Levinas

Levinas pointed to Rosenzweig as the main source of inspiration for his ethical philosophy. Yet Rosenzweig’s 'Star of Redemption' makes love of the neighbour dependent on divine love, whereas Levinas presents a radically secularized commandment to love the neighbour. This introductory session on two of the greatest Jewish thinkers of the 20th-century will focus on seeking an explanation for the radical differences between Levinas and Rosenzweig. No previous knowledge of philosophy is required.

Killing the Gentile Woman: Maimonides on Intermarriage

Maimonides in his Mishneh Torah includes a rule that a Gentile woman who has had sexual relations with a Jewish man should be killed. The commentators struggle with this apparent novelty. We will explore any connections between this rule and other Rabbinic traditions, and grapple with the problematic nature of the Rambam’s law.
