A New Orthodox Theology - Radical Divine Immanence (2 of 2)
Herzl Hefter
Location: Sci 5
Tracks: Kaballah, Modernity, Philosophy
Type: Lecture
We will study selections of the Mei haShiloah and the Sefat Emet. These Hassidic masters teach that God is present in the human heart. The immediacy of the Divine in the human heart feeds a sense of urgency to facilitate its revelation. The consciousness of radical Divine immanence provides an authentic traditional framework to absorb the far reaching changes in human society over the last two hundred years.
Animating Joshua (1 of 2)
Sarah Lefton
Location: Soc 10 (YLC Art)
Tracks: Film/Theatre, Storytelling, Tanach/Text
Type: Creative, Text Study
Revisit the Book of Joshua (or come meet it for the first time) using film storyboarding as a tool for understanding text. No background at all is necessary, although a basic familiarity with Tanach will give you a leg up. We will bring 6 chapters of the Book to life with pen and paper and discuss the challenges inherent in making visual decisions about Biblical texts.
Are the Ten Commandments Still Relevant?
David Hazony
Location: Hum 1
Tracks: Philosophy, Social Justice, Tanach/Text
Type: Lecture, Text Study
The Ten Commandments are probably the world's most recognisable ancient text. Yet few of us can name all ten, and fewer still can say what they're really trying to teach us. This talk will take us on a journey through the Ten Commandments, unlocking their original meaning and revealing the radical approach to life they embody-an approach that makes them just as relevant today as when they first appeared.
Bordering on Acceptance
Gabby Dagan,
Laura Janner-Klausner
Location: Ram 3
Tracks: Leadership, Spirituality, Tanach/Text
Type: Discussion, Text Study
Rejection and acceptance of the 'other' is always a sticky subject. We will take the risk of looking honestly at ourselves as those who define 'others' and as those who are defined as 'others'. We'll examine attitudes to 'the other' and together see how rabbinic texts mirror our own experiences and feelings of being the 'other' and how this affects our work in the rabbinate.
Israel's PR - Time for Fresh Ideas
Uri Dromi
Location: Ram 1
Tracks: Israel
Type: Lecture, Discussion
After decades of 'Hasbara' efforts, we still complain about Israel's image in the media. It's about time that Israel's true side of the story and its prettier faces should be given a chance. The answer is 'soft action', where journalists based in Israel and visiting it will be exposed to Israelis who are not warriors or politicians only, but warm human beings, who yearn for peace and a better future for their children.
Jewish Identity Through Jewish Literature: Israel vs the Diaspora
Aviva Dautch,
Rachel Korazim
Location: Ram 2
Tracks: Diaspora, Israel, Literature
Type: Lecture
Since the late nineteenth century, Israeli and Diaspora Jewish identities have developed in parallel and occasionally veered in dramatically different directions. In this session we'll trace their evolution by comparing how three 'moments' have been represented in Hebrew and Anglo-American Jewish poetry and novels: the Zionist Dream, Post-Holocaust Responses, and the Twenty First Century.
Jewish Marriage Ceremonies Through the Ages
Peter Sevitt

Type: Lecture, Discussion
The history of Jewish marriage ceremonies goes back to biblical times. Come on a journey to see different Jewish marriage ceremonies (and a royal wedding) through the ages and in different countries. What is needed for a Jewish ceremony and what has come from various traditions. Talk discussion and a video.
Jews in Europe: a Socio-Demographic Perspective
Sergio DellaPergola
Location: Sci 3
Tracks: Communities, Diaspora
Type: Lecture
This session discusses past and present demographic trends in Europe, trying to understand the relationship between general economic and political changes and the nature and geographical concentration of the Jewish presence in the continent. Implications for the future of European Jewish communities.
Reclaiming and Reframing the Zionist Idea: a Journey with Herzl
David Breakstone
Location: Sci 2
Tracks: Current affairs, Diaspora, Israel
Type: Workshop / Practical, Text Study
Zionism has become a term that even many of the most committed within the Jewish community find themselves having problems relating to. Where has the negative connotation of Zionism come from? Is there anything that justifies it? What did being a Zionist mean in Herzl's day? What does it mean today? Through study of The Jerusalem Program and other texts we will explore the Zionist idea today and its meaning in our own lives.

Rachel Levmore

Can we take the matter into our own hands? Should we? How can we? Hear from a highly experienced female Rabbinic Court Advocate, an expert in the agunah problem and what you can do to prevent this problem!
The Book Daniel: an Insurrectionary Text?
Shira Solomons
Location: Rootes Chancellors 3
Tracks: Diaspora, Tanach/Text
Type: Discussion, Text Study
Who really didn't see the writing on the wall? Why isn't Daniel considered to be a prophet? And what's it all got to do with Chanukah? Let's get beyond the children's story, look at the text and its history, and discover much deeper lessons about the limits of power, the power of faith, and the faith to remain Jewish in a non-Jewish world.
The Brilliance and the Horror: Faces of German Jewry (1 of 3)
Jonathan Wittenberg
Location: Soc 1
Tracks: History, Literature, Politics
Type: Lecture, Discussion
How wise was Nathan the Wise? Nathan, the hero of Lessing's play, modelled on Moses Mendelssohn, presents the ideal of the plural and tolerant society. But was it really that ideal? Why did Franz Rosenzweig criticise the play so sharply? And why did the Jewish theatre in Nazi Germany choose it for its first production? What did the critics say then? What is the ideal society?

Yossi Ives
