Bringing Text to Life: Midrashic Storytelling

Focusing on a biblical story, we will consult written commentaries, and then engage in a midrashic process, using our imaginations to answer questions that the text leaves unclear. We will improvise dialogues between characters in the story and experiment with telling the story in first person from one character's point of view. Participants will learn a method for interacting with biblical text that can be used to create divrei Torah, or for other presentations.

I grew up in a typical Orthodox family in London and my father played a prominent role in the community. I developed from a terrified teenager to a gay activist. I am now an accepted member of my Orthodox shul in Montreal. Come and hear about my journey.

This is an insider look into the protest and its consequences. We will discuss the Israeli summer of discontent, first talking about the tipping points (The Arab Spring? Rent Prices? Obama?) leading to what was labelled 'Israel's most powerful social unrest'. How does this popular movement relates and corresponds to early, revolutionary versions of Zionism, and what would be a plausible 'New Deal' for Israelis.

The mission of Shalshelet is to enhance spirituality and build community through the creation and dissemination of new Jewish sacred music. In this session, Roanne will discuss the formation of this international institution. She will also describe the four international festivals that Shalshelet has organised in the past 8 years. Shalshelet believes that Jewish sacred music has the power to link Jews, affiliated and unaffiliated, across all denominations.
