Yeshivat Limmud: Hands on Talmud Torah (1 of 4)

Joel Levy
Location: Rootes Sutherland
Tracks: Tanach/Text
Type: Discussion, Text Study

'Tikkun HaOlam' is widely used to describe the task of 'making the world better'. However, the original meaning and its use in the rabbinic tradition is subtle and in some ways deeply subversive. What does 'Tikkun HaOlam' really mean? We will study the fourth chapter of Masechet Gittin to reveal its meanings in Mishnaic and Talmudic traditions. Participants should have some competence in Hebrew and/or some familiarity with rabbinic texts as sources will be teamed without translation but with a lot of help! NB - this is a double length session.

Yeshivat Limmud: Talmud and Halacha (1 of 4)

Nir Nadav
Location: Rootes Chancellors 1
Tracks: Education, Spirituality, Tanach/Text
Type: Discussion, Text Study

We will be taking a methodological approach to studying gemara, looking to develop skills with terminology as well as the principles by which the halacha (law) is derived. We will look at parts of the book 'Halikhot Olam' in concert with our learning of the gemara in order to illuminate our understanding of the underlying structure of the text. Additionally, we will seek to show how the 'halacha lema'aseh' (actual practice) is derived through study of the Rishonim (early authorities) and halacha codes. Some knowledge of Hebrew is advised. NB - this is a double-length session.
