'The Moon Is Jewish'

Michael Schudrich, UK Jewish Film Festival

Type: Film

An extraordinary documentary about self-discovery in contemporary Poland. Pawel's religion was football, and he lived his life according to the code of violence on the terraces in Warsaw. When he discovers that his family was Jewish, his entire world is turned on its head, This is an intimate, insightful film about reconciling the parts of ourselves that sometimes just won' t fit together. Michael Schudrich will introduce the film. (Director Michal Tkaczynski, 2011 Poland. 45 minutes, Polish with English subtitles.)

Minority Status in Israel

Shlomo Molla
Location: Sci 3
Tracks: Diaspora, Israel, Politics
Type: Lecture

Jews as minorities in every population, other than Israel, know what it is like to be a member of a minority. But many people in Israel are members of some minority or other: ethnic, religious, sexual. How does Israel treat them? Does the law protect them adequately?

Needed: a New Orthodox Theology (1 of 2)

Herzl Hefter
Location: Sci 5
Tracks: Modernity, Mysticism, Philosophy
Type: Lecture

In the post modern era where all authority is suspect, it is insufficient to base religious observance upon obedience alone. Claims to any metaphysical truth are greeted with skepticism at best and most often with scorn. Orthodoxy desperately needs a new theology rooted in tradition to address this complex reality. The first session will introduce what I refer to as the Theological Uncertainty Principle.

Teaching in the Name of …: Sayings of the Parents (1 of 2)

Samantha Cohen, Esther Kustanowitz, Jeremy Leigh, Raymond Simonson
Location: Hum 2
Tracks: Education, Poetry, Tanach/Text
Type: Discussion, Text Study

'Whoever repeats something in the name of the one that said it, brings redemption to the world' (Pirke Avot 6:6). There is a great Jewish tradition to acknowledge the person who taught you that which you are now teaching to others. Teaching in the name of someone who has passed away is a wonderful way of keeping that person's name, memory and values alive. Join a son of a rabbi, a daughter of a popular Jewish writer, and a son of a Jewish-atheist as we share some wisdom in the name of our late parents.

Yucky Texts: Dealing with the Hard Stuff in Our Tradition

Gregg Drinkwater
Location: Soc 1
Tracks: Halacha, Tanach/Text
Type: Text Study

Many parts of the Torah and other classical Jewish texts are challenging, if not downright disturbing. How do we deal with these texts? Do we re-interpret them, skip over them, or just get angry? This session will suggest some ways of dealing with what I call 'yucky texts,' not because they are inherently yucky, but because they are the texts that cause us trouble and discomfort.
