America and the Holocaust: Using History to Fight Contemporary Battles?
Deborah Lipstadt
Location: Arts - Conference
Tracks: History, Holocaust, Israel
Type: Discussion
America's response to the persecution of European Jewry during 1930s and 1940s causes a great deal of debate. Some condemn it and accuse the Roosevelt administration of being antisemitic. Others argue that it did all that was possible to aid Jews. What does the historical evidence say about these two arguments? Is it possible that, in fact, these arguments are less about what happened during the Holocaust and more about contemporary politics?

Sex and lust, jealousy and ambition - what would we do without them? How can we cope with them? The yetzer hara (evil inclination) has been seen as the root of powerful and destructive desires but if turned around, these can be positive motivating and even delightful forces in our lives!

Nittelnacht: Christmas in the Yeshiva
Benjamin Crowne

How did Jews mark Christmas in Eastern Europe? With wards, parody gospels, a secret fast and memories of a pagan past. This session will consider the scurrilous, scandalous and syncretistic history of Jewish-Christian relations in the era before interfaith... All sources in Hebrew and English - no prior knowledge is required.
Pre-Praying
Daniel Lichman
Location: Ram 6
Tracks: Meditation, Spirituality, Tanach/Text
Type: Workshop / Practical, Text Study
In tractate Brachot of the Talmud we are told that pious people in ancient times would spend an hour preparing for prayer. What did they do during this hour? In this session we will study the text and speculate on what they might have done. We'll then try out some of the possible methods ourselves.

Rebecca Joy Fletcher

A workshop on the early culture and history of the world's 'first modern Hebrew city' through the lens of its satiric cabarets. We'll explore the jokes, stories, and photos of the early city, and we'll get on our feet and act out original comedic sketches from the cabarets (with new English translations). You'll swear they could have been written today! Non-actors and non-Hebrew speakers are very welcome. This session is particularly geared for young adults.
