Shimshon Raphael Hirsch - What Did He Really Stand For?

Reuben's Law states that at some point every Jewish leader and movement, from ultra-orthodox to extreme assimilationist, and from rejectionist rightists to rabid anti-Zionists, will sooner or later claim to be following in the footsteps of Shimshon Raphael Hirsch, the rabbi of the Adath Yeshurun in Frankfurt from 1851. We will consider how he inspired such contrasting groups, and see whether all or any of them can support their claim.

The Book of Jubilees and Rebecca

The Book of Jubilees' is a retelling of the stories of Genesis and the beginning of Exodus written by a Hasmonean Jew around a century BCE. While some episodes are re-told with few additions, others are considerably extended. Rebecca's role as mother, grandmother, daughter-in-law and wife is particularly strongly developed and we will divide our time between an overview of this fascinating book and a more detailed look at the chapters on Rebecca.
