Shabbat

The pre-conference Shabbat (21st/22nd December 2007) is a relaxed and intimate way (there's usually 300-400 people) to start Conference. There'll be great food (meat - though vegetarian food is also offered!) and plenty of time to get to know many of the great participants and presenters who will be staying for the main part of Conference too.

There's plenty of time set aside for introductions, singing and sharing great stories. Saturday night (Motzei Shabbat) there's always a great party atmosphere with a Jewish theme and this year will be no different. The details are top secret until you arrive, but we can guarantee that it will be great fun.

How does Shabbat work practically - will I be able to or forced to observe Shabbat whilst I am there?

Shabbat is observed in public places so that everyone can feeel confortable, regardless of their level of observance.
Therefore none of the sessions will require you to break Shabbat, but what you do in your own room is up to you. There will be an eruv provided for the majority of the site and participants have the opportunity to either attend services on the Friday night and Shabbat morning, practice Torah yoga or spend time chilling with friends and family. If you're interested in organising a service, please let us know at conf07-volunteers@limmud.org.

Is there a full programme over Shabbat?

There are sessions organised over Shabbat to cover a range of topics as diverse as the rest of conference. Some of these will be family friendly, but there is no Young Limmud Conference programme over Shabbat. Sessions range from a practical workshop on Hassidic Niggunim to a discussion on eTheft, eLoshen Hara, a Treasure Hunt, Biblio Yoga and an in depth Z'mirot workshop.

Are families welcome?

Families are, as with any Limmud event, very welcome to attend, however it is worth noting that there will be no child care/creche or babysitting services. These start on Sunday.

If I've never been to Limmud before, would it be a good idea to come to the pre-conference Shabbat?

As a first timer, it is a great introduction to Conference and Limmud and gives you a taster of some of the presenters as well as the way that Limmud runs and so you'll have a head start when it comes to planning for the next five days!

I've been to conference loads of times but coming for the pre-conference Shabbat has never appealed, why would you suggest that I come?

There are some Limmud friends who, although you would love to stay in touch with throughout the year, you only ever get to see at Limmud and so this is the perfect opportunity to spend more time with them and meet some great new people. It also gives you an opportunity to wind down and relax before conference starts.
