Email no 5 - 5 July - presenters, Helen's tea party and a chance to go to the Ways of Reading Conference at the British Library
In the month since the last update we've had volunteer drinks at the Adelaide (where we talked about how we'll make use of the site and some of the new things going on this year, and welcomed some new volunteers) and 40 people have said 'yes, thank you for the invitation, I'd be delighted to present at Conference' - well done to the programming team.
We're halfway through the year, and from now on these updates will get more frequent (and hopefully more regular as well).
This email's contents:
1. Tea party for Helen Lyons
2. Volunteer opportunity 'Ways of reading' conference at the British Library next week
3. Know your Chavruta from your Chevruta - a style guide
4. Presenter update
5. Diary
6. Joke
Got questions; want to hear what's going on in particular areas? Others probably do too - let me know - conference2007@limmud.org
And if you're feeling that you're a bit 'out of it', and want to get more involved, then please drop me an email. We've also got vacancies up on the website at http://www.limmud.org/conference/jointeam/
1. TEA PARTY
Helen Lyons, who worked in the office for the last seven years, is having a farewell and welcome to the volunteer team party this Sunday afternoon at the home of Claire Straus and Micah Gold in East Finchley. If you know Helen and would like to come along, then please let me know on conference2007[at]limmud.org and I'll give you the details (we hope we can all fit in!).
2. AN OPPORTUNITY FOR OUR VOLUNTEERS - 'WAYS OF READING' CONFERENCE AT THE BRITISH LIBRARY - NEXT WEEK
Limmud is all about taking us one step further on our Jewish journeys. For this reason, the Steering Group has decided to put some money aside to thank volunteers for their contribution by offering places at events that do just that.
As a first step, we're pleased to be able to offer support for our volunteers to go to next week's Ways of Reading Conference at the British Library as part of their Sacred Texts exhibition.
The event will look at the different ways of interpreting sacred texts and consider the controversies and conflicts this may bring. It includes sessions from Avivah Gottlieb-Zornberg, Naftali Brawer and Rafi Zarum amongst other distinguished speakers from Judaism, Islam and Christianity.
We will pay for:
- TEN volunteers places to attend one evening lecture as part of this event on 9/10 July or "Multi faith / multi channel - God in the digital future" on 18 July, or to get £15 off the full conference (note that it is also daytime event)
If you would like to take advantage, then please email Charles, Naomi and Daniel (the volunteer team) on conf07-volunteers[at]limmud.org. And if you see similar educational events you think volunteers may be interested in, then also pass on the information ...
3. KNOW YOUR CHAVRUTA FROM YOUR CHEVRUTA - WRITING FOR LIMMUD CONFERENCE - A STYLE GUIDE
From time to time we all need to prepare documents for Conference. The communications team has prepared a terrific guide that helps us all make sure that what we prepare looks Limmudy, whether it's the fonts or the spelling (especially with Hebrew words - useful to know whether we have morning Chevruta or Chavruta to go with your croissants.)
It's available from Michael Wohl michaelwohl[at]hotmail.com. If you would like the Limmud font set, then Michael has that too.
4. PRESENTER UPDATE
The programming team is busy with international presenters - this year's conference is shaping up to have an excellent programme. Presenters so far include:
A B Yehoshua - top Israeli author
Reva L'Sheva - Israeli / Chasidic band
Y-Love - New York Jewish rapper
Ruth Yaron - IDF spokesperson
Efraim Zuroff - from the Weisenthal centre
Ruth Messinger - key figure in American Jewish social action
Judith Plaskow - well known writer on Jewish womens' issues
Judith Hauptmann - from the Jewish Theological Seminary
A full list of presenters will be posted on the website within the next few weeks. Our international presenters list is now pretty full, but we would welcome ideas for UK presenters, or even suggestions for regulars we should make sure come back. We will also be asking for volunteer presenters to come forward a bit earlier this year, for various logistic reasons.
We do also need some more programming team members, so do let us know if you are interested.
